If you can tell a book by its cover, image what the front porch says. You can learn a lot about the condition of and history of a house by walking up the front walk. It’s an indication of how well the homeowner has maintained the property. Take in the whole house, including the front porch, the outdoor lights, the condition of the landscaping.
Do some soul searching before you start house hunting. Unless you’re Oprah, chances are you’ve got a budget, so figure out what you can’t live without. Here’s a check list to get you started…I’ll buy the house if, and only if....
My commute to work is less than ____ The lot is at least ___ (acres) The backyard has ____ (privacy fence, swimming pool, deck, patio, a golf course….) The kitchen includes ____ (an eat-in area, oak cabinets, hardwood floors, double oven….) There are ____ bedrooms The master bedroom ____ (is on the main level, has cathedral ceilings, has walk-in closets) The house is built on crawl space, and not on slab. There’s a basement, which is ____ (fully finished, has a full bath, partial-size, unfinished, large enough for a 52-inch screen TV) The garage is at least ____ (three-car attached, one-car detached…)
